Samoyed Snippet

Dogs can get cavities and develop periodontal disease, so their teeth should be cleaned with a pet toothpaste at least twice per week. Use a small toothbrush that has soft bristles. Cleanings performed by a veterinarian may also be required for your dog.

Trivia concerning Samoyeds, dogs, and pets in general.

March 23, 2006 - Central Park coyote - NEW YORK, NY (NY Times) -- A coyote's romp in Central Park ended yesterday with a tranquilizer dart and a nap, but only after a messy breakfast (hold the feathers), a dip in a chilly pond and a sprint past a skating rink-turned-movie set.

It looks like "Hal" will be relocated to a suitable wilderness region. Good luck, intrepid Hal! Not many of us would hang out in Central Park after midnight.

Docking dogs' tails...may soon become illegal in Scotland. Here's a Wikipedia page ...on docking and bobbing: docking link.

Interestingly, it's banned in many countries, beginning with Sweden in 1989. The European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals forbids the cropping of animals' ears; however, it's an open convention.

March 15, 2006 - Iditarod dog sled race:
1. This year's winner of the grueling, controversial race was native Californian Jeff King: official Iditarod web site. Uh, don't you do this with one of the dogs SFSR adopts to you...(webmaster's personal opinion!)

2. Four-time Iditarod winner and pioneering woman musher Susan Butcher is fighting leukemia and in Seattle, WA for chemotherapy and bone marrow transplants.

3. Your SFSR webmaster read John Balzar's book, Yukon Alone, which was about the Yukon Quest dog sled race. It's a tougher, less well-known version of the Iditarod. A good read--if you've got a free afternoon--but I would caution parents about tossing it at their children: Rated R.

Kibble: What's in a name?

...is not an easy word to track down, even though you have bags of it in your utility room!

One story is that it originates with a Mr. William Kibble, who was the manager of a road production of Uncle Tom's Cabin in the 1880s to 1890s. It seems that Mr. Kibble had a dog and pony show associated with the production, and he ordered broken dog biscuits for his animal stock. Hence the name.

Another story, actually right out of the Collaborative International Dictionary of English, tells us that it means (1) to crush or grind coarsely or (2) a metal bucket used for lifting materials (e.g. chunks of rock) from a well or mine shaft.
