Where to Start

Samoyed Snippet

Samoyeds have that lovely white coat, sometimes with cream or biscuit trim. Their coat can mat and needs to be brushed weekly and during the shedding period, daily. Puppies should be groomed regularly. Your Samoyed should never be shaved. The combings from your Samoyed can be spun and knitted or woven into extremely warm, soft garments. Toenails need to be kept short and teeth cleaned regularly.

San Francisco Samoyed Rescue Chronicles

Here's the news for the end of 2007, in reverse chronological order.

(31-Dec-07) We would like to say Thank You to all the people who participated in the eBay auction. It was a great success and SFSR made just over $600!

(11-Dec-07) POSTPONED! Come join us for a hike! The Big Foot Snow Hike is on December 16th at 9am. This hike is an out and back trail totaling approximately 5 miles. Read more.

(21-Nov-07) We have Luna at our house (Ron and Bev). She's really quite tranquil and beginning to demand food and attention. Likes taking a walk--an easy dog all around. Has a few health problems, evidently due to her prior situation...cf. adoption page.

(13-Nov-07) We're going to hold off neutering Gunner and Dodger for the moment, because of health concerns. We also have Luna into SFSR care--but in rehabilitation for a skin condition--perhaps due to hypothyroidism. Meet them all on the adoption page.

(06-Nov-07) Jacqueline rescued Gunner from the San Luis Obispo, CA shelter and transported him to the Bay Area. Details on the adoption page.

(05-Nov-07) This is a little bit late, but here are some shelter rescue dogs, Samoyed-mixes, that are worth your attention: Chip, Snow, and Buddy.

(04-Nov-07) Beverley rescued Luna out of the Humane Society of Silicon Valley shelter and dropped her off at a kennel for rehabilatory foster care.

(03-Nov-07) We picked up Dodger from his former owner and dropped him off for foster care with Dick in Pleasanton, CA.

(29-Oct-07) Quick rescue update distilled from Beverley's email: Mikki is in her new home; Sam in Wyoming: transport on hold as shelter may have located the owner; Tanaka in Peninsula HS: adopted from shelter; in Stockton, CA: 2 possible Sam mixes, but our sister dog rescue organization Norsled is investigating; Pulgas (uh, impressive: worst dog name yet! fleas in Spanish) in Riverside, CA was pulled on behalf of another rescue person.

(28-Oct-07) Dog update from Bev: Snowy from China--AHAN, who is bringing the dog over from China, has a family interested in the dog, and so may not need our assistance after all; Luna in Santa Clara, CA: Silicon Valley HS called today about a dog that was owner surrendered to the shelter today, about 8 years old and a bit of a mess, but very sweet; Bev ran over there to check on Luna, since it's only about 15 mins. away: Bottom line is that she has questionable health, and we're waiting on some veterinary opinions at the moment.

(22-Oct-07) Four dogs on the radar for SFSR rescue help: Sam in Rawlins, WY; Blizzy in Ridgecrest, CA; Tanaka, at Peninsula Humane Society, Bay Area, CA; and Snow, from AHAN (www.ahan.org).

(21-Oct-07) The Bay Area Siberian Husky Club (BASH) Fall Furry Flurry was fun and well-organized, but a bit sparsely attended. It appears that there was just too much going on, Sibe-dog-wise. SFSR had a table, and collected about $40 in donations. Seems disappointing at first, but there we found a home for Eski-mix Mikki! Beverley did a home check right after the event, and Mikki is adoption pending with Leslie, Mike, and family in Campbell, CA. Checkout Mikki's blog. Ron and Bev helped out for SFSR.

(20-Oct-07) Great rescue event: the Adoption Fair at Bishop Ranch Vet Center, San Ramon, CA. Focused on rescue, not commercial products. People came that were interested in adopting rescue dogs and cats. Therefore: Lots of interest in SFSR's table and purpose. Valiant SFSR volunteers: Beverley, Jacqueline, Pat, and Cindy. Thanks!

(19-Oct-07) Mikki's pup Adam has a new name: Hermes, after the Greek god. He was a faithful messenger, technically astute, good-natured, a god of abundance, and guided divine children to sanctuary (cf. Oxford Classical Dictionary, sub voce). Not a bad résumé...but I remember how he used to nip my ankle when we fostered him! Hermes wiki.

(15-Oct-07) Sorry, folks, it's true: Siberia really has been adopted by Ray & family in Mountain View, CA. I'm pasting him onto the adopted page in a matter of seconds!

(14-Oct-07) Mikki's pup Adam is now adoption pending with a family in Lafayette, CA.

(09-Oct-07) Hoss, one of Mikki's pups, is out of our place and into his new digs, doing well in Cupertino, CA. Brother Adam is available on the adoption page, and we've had some enquiries.

(05-Oct-07) Siberia flew into San Jose, CA from AZ--where there is (I'm ashamed to say) a real baseball team!--with his owner, to be happily adopted by Ray & family in Mountain View, CA.

(02-Oct-07) Blanco, the three-legged, blue-eyed Sammie, has been adopted. So has Tovah (Sierra). I'll be moving their stories and pictures over to the illustrious adopted page.

(01-Oct-07) It looks like Siberia is adoption pending with a family in Mountain View, CA, south of San Francisco.

(01-Oct-07) Sad and happy for us: The most exuberant of Mikki's pups, Hoss, is now adoption pending with a family in Cupertino, CA. Puppy details on the adoption page. Also, please checkout Mikki's blog.

(23-Sep-07) Well, it looks like Princess's owner has figured out a way to keep her; I'm removing her from the list of adoptable dogs.

(22-Sep-07) There's a female Samoyed-mix, Aurora, at the Scotts Valley, CA shelter. More info: adoption page.

(18-Sep-07) We have a young male Samoyed, Siberia, now available for adoption. You can meet him on the adoption page.

(16-Sep-07) Princess, an eight year-old female Samoyed, is now posted on the adoption page.

(15-Sep-07) Sad and happy for us: It's time to list Mikki's pups for adoption. Hoss and Adam are now seven weeks old and ready for a new home in just a few more weeks. Puppy details on the adoption page. Also, please checkout Mikki's blog.

(15-Sep-07) I've updated the memorial page with a note about Cayla and Barbara and Greg's recollections of Keno.

(12-Sep-07) We had enquiries from three people about surrendering their Samoyeds into SFSR care.

(11-Sep-07) Tovah (Sierra) is now adoption pending with Dave, Carrie, and Mylah in Pleasanton, CA. Check out her latest photos on the adoption page.

(10-Sep-07) The Samoyed females from Baldwin Park, CA (SoCal), Misty and Crystal, were sicker than was known. They both contracted pneumonia at the shelter. Unfortunately, Misty, who also had a mass on her spleen, did not make it. She died yesterday at Joy's house. Crystal is being treated for pneumonia. She seems healthier overall than Misty, so we're hoping for the best. Joy has spent a lot of money trying to help these girls! From all of us at SFSR, thank you so much Joy!

(02-Sep-07) The Samoyed females in Baldwin Park, CA (SoCal), Misty and Crystal, have been pulled from the shelter, brought to Northern California, and are adoption pending with Joy in Marin County. SFSR members Brian and Lisa took time out from their Labor Day weekend to make the last link in the transport chain. Thanks to Kendra, an independent rescuer from Bakersfield, CA; to Samoyed Rescue of Southern California; and to Hugo of Bay Area Siberian Husky Rescue (BASHR) for helping to save these dogs.
